Session 2013-14
Immigration Bill
Supplementary written evidence from Residential Landlords Association (IB 08)
Re: Public Bill Committee – Evidence Session – Immigration Bill Tuesday 29 October 2013 at 2 p.m.
I am writing to advise you that, regrettably, I may have misled the Committee in respect of the number of private landlords. At Question 84 Mr. Phil Wilson asked "How many private landlords are there"? I responded "1.2 million". Subsequently we were asked whether this number related just to England or the whole of the United Kingdom. I, in error, said that this was for the whole of the United Kingdom. On subsequently checking the response we made to the Government’s consultation I would like to make it clear that the figure of 1.2 million (which in itself is an estimate anyway) refers only to England. There are an estimated 70,000 landlords in Wales although again estimates vary.
I hope that this clarifies the position and I apologise for what occurred, due to the relevant papers not being immediately available.
I would be grateful if you could draw this letter to the Committee’s attention. I am copying it to Carolyn Uphill and Caroline Kenny who gave evidence alongside me.
