1 Introduction
1. We carried out this inquiry into the performance
of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
in 2013-14 as part of our remit to examine the expenditure, administration
and policy of Defra and its associated public bodies. Defra published
its Annual Report and Accounts 2013-14 on 10 July 2014, which
set out what the Department achieved during 2013-14 and its plans
for the future, in relation to both financial statements and governance.
2. The National Audit Office (NAO) assisted our inquiry
by producing an Overview of Defra's activity and performance since
September 2013.[1] We also
submitted written questions to Defra and held two oral evidence
sessions: with the Permanent Secretary, Bronwyn Hill CBE and other
officials; and with the Secretary of State, Rt Hon Elizabeth
Truss MP. The evidence is published on our website.[2]
