Annex 7: Letter from Keith Vaz, Chair of the
Home Affairs Select Committee
"Thank you for your letter and attachments of
17 December 2014. I read with interest the Commission's 2015 Work
Programme. I fully support your Committee's proposals for the
House, through its committees, to take a more co-ordinated and
strategic approach to scrutiny of the Work Programme, although
I realise that it will not be possible to do so this year.
"There are two proposals in the Work Programme
which I believe will be of particular interest to our successor
Committee in the next Parliament:
· the European Agenda on Security for the
period 2015-2020, and
· the European Agenda on Migration.
"In examining these proposals, our successors
will be able to draw on the substantial work which we have done
on counter-terrorism and migration throughout the current Parliament,
including our recent work on the situation of migrants at Calais.
I believe that scrutiny of these measures within the main-stream
of the Committee's scrutiny of these policy areas, alongside scrutiny
of the work of the UK government, will be likely to have more
impact than discrete inquiries into the agendas themselves.
"I have asked the Committee Clerk to ensure
that these proposals are drawn to the Committee's attention at
the beginning of the next Parliament."
