CHAIR OF THE BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL (BBSRC)

I am writing to inform you that I have identified Sir Gordon Duff as the Government's candidate to be the new Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and to invite the Science and Technology Select Committee to hold a pre-appointment hearing in line with the procedure agreed in the Government's Response to the Liaison Committee's First Report of Session 2007-08, HC 594.

Sir Gordon is Principal, St Hilda's College Oxford. He chairs the Strategic Partners Board of the Imperial Academic Health Science Centre. He also chairs the Medical Research Council-National Institute of Health Research's National Phenome Centre (Imperial College), the Scientific Advisory Board of the Medical Research Council Centre for Drug Safety Sciences (Liverpool) and the Scientific Advisory Board of Interleukin Genetics Inc, Boston. He also serves on the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was previously Chair of the MHRA (UK national regulator of medicines and medical devices).

The current Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Chair Sir Tom Blundell steps down on 30 June 2015.

I annex details of the legal basis of the appointment and the recruitment process (Annex A), and attach the information pack for candidates which includes a job description and person specification and terms and conditions (Annex B) and Professor Sir Gordon Duff's CV (Annex C).
