Thank you for your letter of 13 May, regarding the recruitment of a new Chairman of the Electoral Commission and the appointment of a new Electoral Commissioner with responsibility for Scotland.
I have read your letter with care and am grateful to you and the Speaker’s Committee for providing information on the process that has been taken with regard to these two appointment, and the background of the proposed candidates.
I am happy to give my support both to Sir John Holmes to be appointed as the new Chairman of the Commission, starting on 1 January 2017 for a four year term, and also to Dame Susan Bruce to replace John McCormick as the Electoral Commissioner with special responsibility for Scotland, also starting on 1 January 2017 for a four year term.
With that, I am content for a motion to be made in the House of Commons to the effect that an Address be presented to Her Majesty The Queen seeking the appointment of both Sir John Holmes and Dame Susan Bruce, both for four years.
