Offensive Weapons Bill

Written evidence submitted by Mark Stone (OWB02)

I am urging the committee to seriously reconsider reclassifying certain firearms as "prohibited weapons" under section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968.

I have very little use of my left arm and cannot hold and cock my rifle other than when I sit at a bench. The M.A.R.S rifle enables me to continue to enjoy my hobby and participate in competitions. There is ZERO evidence that crime will be reduced by this badly thought out bill. This is just banning things for the sake of it. None of these rifles which you are seeking to outlaw has been used in criminal activity. I do believe that there was an instance regarding a .50 calibre that was smuggled in pieces, from USA into Southern Ireland, during the dark days of problems in N Ireland. I do not believe it was ever fired.

Gun crime is up but none of this is due to the class of gun which you are seeking to reclassify. There are other issues that need to be addressed to reduce that and this bill will do nothing other than affect responsible gun owners in the UK.

Remember, when all the guns have been outlawed, only outlaws will use guns.

Yours faithfully

Mark Stone
