Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments Twenty-Ninth Report

Memorandum by the Lord Chancellor's Department

1.  By a letter dated 25 March 1998, the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments has requested the Department to submit a memorandum on the following point:

In relation to item 6.1(iv) and (v) of the Schedule, the respective fees for each print of colour A4 sheet and colour A3 sheet have been increased from £2.10 and £4.20 to £4.20 and £8.40. Explain the reason for these substantial increases.

2.  The Public Record Office is holding the price on its most highly used process, the A3 monochrome copy, at £0.40. Colour A4 and colour A3 copies are a much less used process. A rigorous appraisal of process costs in 1997/98 found that the Public Record Office was substantially underpricing these two processes, and with the aim of achieving full cost recovery in line with Treasury guidelines, the prices were raised. They are in line with those charged by analogous institutions.
