Joint Committee on The Draft Communications Bill Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Memorandum submitted by Antaine O'Donnaile

I am very alarmed to learn that there is, at present, no mention of Irish language broadcasting in Northern Ireland in the Communications Bill. This is a situation which needs to be addressed immediately. Broadcasting in Northern Ireland is not the responsibilty of the local administration at Stormont and therefore Westminster must deal with the issue. It is crucial that broadcasters in Northern Ireland are encouraged to put the Irish language programming at the very least on a par with Gaelic broadcasting in Scotland in terms of money allocated and air-time.
