Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments Second Report

Memorandum from the Department of Health

1. The Committee has requested a memorandum on the following point:

In its memorandum of November 2001 (printed as Appendix 4 of the Committee's Tenth Report (Session 2001-02), the Department acknowledged that it would be useful to consolidate the National Health Service (Travelling Expenses and Remission of Charges) Regulations 1988, and stated that it hoped to dedicate the necessary resources to that work during the next year. Explain what progress has been made and when the consolidation is expected to be completed.

2. The Department has made resources available to consolidate these Regulations and intends that they will be in force in April 2003. As part of the process the Department intends to simplify the organisation of the provisions to improve their clarity and transparency.

3. The Department brings to the Committee's attention that there may be further amending regulations to the 1988 regulations before the consolidation takes effect.
