Dear Francene,

I am the recently appointed Chief Executive of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. The national charity aimed at addressing violence and aggression in society by improving individual's personal safety awareness through training, advice, support and guidance. Also through raising awareness of personal safety issues in society by working alongside government and other statutory and non statutory bodies.

Having studied the draft charities bill I am surprise that nowhere in the charitable purposes does the area of crime or safety appear. Given the wide ranging government agendas tackling these issues and the increasing concern within society about them it is the view of the Trust that this could be usefully reinforced though inclusion in the charitable purposes.

As well as The Suzy Lamplugh Trust there is a broad range of charities already providing such services for the benefit of the public. Whilst our work does fall within several of the listed purposes we feel that issues around safety and crime are significant enough to warrant particular mention through their own purposes:

The prevention of violence and crime

The advancement of personal safety

I hope that the joint committee will give consideration to these proposals. Please do contact me if you wish to discuss this letter any further. I look forward to hearing from you, Yours sincerely,
