Francene Graham,

Committee Assistant to the

Joint Committee on the Draft Charities Bill

Scrutiny Unit,

July 2004

Dear Ms Graham,

Sussex Wildilife Trust is a member of the PFRA (Public Fundraising Regulatory Association). We consider that the PFRA is best able to represent our views on the possible impact of the Bill on direct dialogue fundraising. We refer the committee to the PFRA written response on these issues.

As background for the committee to show how important this method of fundraising is to the sector we are able to share with you in confidence our plans to recruit 2300 new households using street fundraising (direct dialogue) in 2004/5. We are relying on our street recruited supporters to donate £160,000 in 2004/5 to fund our vital work."

Sussex Wildlife Trust (through our providers) runs 'soft sell', low density, low impact recruitment campaigns.

in 2004/5 we have just 3 individuals working on our behalf as doorstep recruiters and we currently have 3 recruiters working on our behalf F2F in Sussex (population 1,480,000).

It is impossible to predict exactly where we are likely to carry out campaigns across the next year as it largely depends on where recruiters live: with 'Doorstep' running March to October, we inevitably lose one or two recruiters every winter and they need replacing.

Our F2F activity is mainly carried out with recruiters working alone with a display about the Trusts work in the foyer of supermarkets.

With our recruitment methods ( D2D and F2F) we experience attrition rates of under 10% compared with the high pressure F2F agencies results of more than 30%. I consider that our attrition rates clearly indicate the high quality, low pressure methods used by 'our' recruiters

In legislating to regulate the activities of those who are less than scrupulous, it would be a great pity if the new scheme has a very adverse affect on the income of responsible small organisations such as 47 individual Wildlife Trusts.

Yours sincerely
