Joint Committee on the Draft Charities Bill Written Evidence

DCH 210 Memorandum from Rev and Mrs Braybrooke

To Francene Graham,
Srutiny Unit,
Committee Office,
House of Commons,

28.6.04

Dear Francene Graham,

Draft Charities Bill

Although I am President of the World Congress of Faiths, I am writing in an individual capacity, as there has not been time for the Executive Committee to have a full discussion of the Draft Charities Bill.

Some members of the Congress have expressed concern that the Draft Bill does not contain a clear definition of 'religion' nor does it define what is the public benefit of a religion. This lack of clarity may be prejudicial to newer religious groups or to religions such as Jainism which do not speak of a Supernatural Being. It is important that the new act does not appear to discriminate against minority religious communitiues.

With good wishes for your difficult but important work,

Yours sincerely
