Joint Committee on the Draft Charities Bill Written Evidence

DCH 330 Supplementary memorandum from the Federation of Small Businesses

Dear Vincent

Thank you for your helpful reminder on the note I need to do following my evidence on 23 June.

According to the Association of Charity Shops and following their first ever national consumer survey released on 2 June 2003, they stated that, "A range of other items are also being bought by at least one in four consumers including Cards and Stationery". Such goods can only be bought-in new goods.

I would also refer the Committee to the fact that the British Heart Foundation is developing a number of up market concept shops. This must of course lead to more new goods being sold. Furthermore the Salvation Army, is we understand going down the specialist route of selling new retro clothing.

The Association of Charity Shops also state on their website under the heading "Where do the goods in charity shops come from?"

the following: "Oxfam sells both bought-in and ethically produced "fair trade" goods. Oxfam is a major player on the high street with over 760 shops nationwide.

I do hope the above is helpful.

Regards
