Joint Committee on the Draft Gambling Bill Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 1454 - 1459)

TUESDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2004

MR NICK BUNN, MR TONY KELLY AND MR PETER MATTHEWS

Q1454  Chairman: Can I first of all welcome Nick Bunn, Peter Matthews and Tony Kelly from the TGWU. Gentlemen, you are most welcome today. Can I just make one or two announcements, as we normally do at the start of each session. Can I ask you to note that Elliot Grant from the Bill Team is present and available should we need to clarify any point about the Bill, and can I ask you to note that a transcript of the meeting will be produced and placed on the Internet within about a week. A full declaration of interests of members of the Committee was made at the beginning of our first meeting and information published in the note of those interests is available. It is not necessary for each witness to answer every question if they have nothing to add to the answer of another member of the panel, but do please add something if you feel you wish to comment. Gentlemen, could I begin by asking a general question. Do your members consist only of people who work in the casino industry and how many casino employees do you represent? Who represents the interests of other employees within the gambling industry?

Mr Bunn: Yes, that is correct, we represent just casino workers. We have about 950 members. We represent casinos in London and the suburbs of London as well.

Q1455  Chairman: Is there any union membership significant in other parts of the gambling industry, like betting shops?

Mr Bunn: Well, the GMB represents casino workers as well. In my company, Gala, we have got a joint agreement with the GMB, so they have got a significant union presence and members of about the same numbers.

Q1456  Chairman: So they have also got about 950?

Mr Bunn: Yes, something like that.

Q1457  Chairman: So between the two of you, you have just under 2,000?

Mr Bunn: That would be in the London area and the south-east.

Q1458  Chairman: Is there union membership in casinos in other parts of the country or not?

Mr Kelly: Well, it would not be very high actually, no. It would not be part of our remit anyway.

Q1459  Lord Mancroft: Gala members presumably are bingo.

Mr Bunn: There are Gala casinos and Gala bingo. We represent the Gala casinos.
