Joint Committee On Human Rights Written Evidence

13. Memorandum from the GMB

I am writing to you convey the GMB's support for the proposal that you will have now received from the Institute of Employment Rights.

Our experience is that basic human rights such as the right to strike in Britain is severely limited by current UK law, and the effect that these limitations have on our members and our ability to lawfully represent them in legitimate disputes with employers is fundamentally unjust.

Our view is that the law must be reformed so that UK workers are entitled to the right to take industrial action as the International Covenant demands when faced with inflexible employers.

I urge your Committee to consider the current unfair law and the Institute of Employment Rights suggested reforms, so that in the future justifiable disputes can be settled lawfully—and our members will no longer need to tolerate injustice.
