Economic Affairs Committee Press Notice No. 22 (2001-2002) dated 17 June 2002 LORDS COMMITTEE GLOBALISATION INQUIRY: HEARINGS The House of Lords Select Committee on Economic Affairs continues its hearings in relation to its inquiry into the impact of the globalisation of the world economy. Tomorrow, on Tuesday 18th June at 4 pm, evidence will be heard from Mr David Coles, Managing Director, and Dr Axel Gietz, Corporate Affairs Director, DHL. The hearing will take place in Committee Room 4. On Thursday 20th June at 4 pm, evidence will be heard from Mr Nicholas Stern, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President, World Bank. The hearing will take place in Committee Room 3, Committee Corridor, Palace of Westminster. Access to the Palace is via St Stephen's Entrance, the main public entrance to the Houses of Parliament. The hearings are open to the public and the press. Announcements of further hearings will be made weekly. NOTES FOR EDITORS 1. The Committee was appointed by the House of Lords on 7 March 2001 and reappointed on 28 June with the following terms of reference:"to consider economic affairs". On 24 July 2001 the Committe published a Call for Evidence in relation to its inquiry into globalisation of the world economy announced on 22 March 2001. The deadline for written submissions (31 January 2002 (extended from 8 October)) has now expired. The Committee is also undertaking a brief review of the domestic economy in teh context of recent world developments. 2. Membership:
3. The House of Lords appointed, on 7 December 1998, a Select Committee to consider the operation of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. Its last report, HL Paper 34 (Session 2000-01), was published in February 2001. Previously, in June 2000, the Liaison Committee of the House of Lords recommended "the appointment of a sessional Economic Committee after the present ad hoc Committee on the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England has concluded its inquiry" (HL Paper 81 (Session 1999-2000)). 4.
