THE LYING IN STATE OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER

From Friday 5 April to Tuesday 9 April 2002

Arrival of the Cortège at Westminster Hall on Friday 5 April

1.  Space permitting, Peers, Officers of the House of Lords, and their spouses may enter Westminster Hall to witness the arrival of the Cortège at 12 noon on Friday 5 April. They are required to be in Westminster Hall by 11.30 am. Westminster Hall access points will be clearly signposted and Ushers will direct those attending to the appropriate location. Peers and Officers should enter from the House of Lords end. Special instructions will be issued to those wearing Court Dress and Uniform, but those wearing morning dress or lounge suits are advised to wear a black tie (armbands are not required). It is suggested that Ladies wear black or dark clothing (hats optional). The intention to attend with or without a spouse should be indicated on the attached form which should be returned as soon as possible to Black Rod's Office, Tel: 020 7219 3100, Fax: 020 7219 2500.

Three Full Days' Lying in State: Saturday 6 April to Monday 8 April

2.  Peers and staff of the House of Lords may conduct up to 6 guests to Westminster Hall between the hours of 10.00 am and 6.00 pm each full day of the Lying in State. Access points will be clearly signposted. No tickets are necessary, but hosts are required to meet their guests at Peers' Entrance and to stay with them personally throughout the time that their guests are in the Palace of Westminster. It would be courteous to advise guests to wear black ties and sombre clothing.

3.  Peers and Officers may additionally invite two unescorted guests during each full day of the Lying in State. No unescorted guest admittance cards to Westminster Hall will be available on the day the Cortège arrives or departs. Access points for unescorted guests will be clearly marked. Applications for unescorted guest cards should be made on the attached form to Black Rod's Office: Tel: 020 7129 3100, Fax: 020 7219 2500.

4.  No private entertaining will be permitted in the Cholmondeley and Attlee Rooms in the Palace of Westminster throughout the Lying in State and any such functions arranged will be automatically cancelled. Lunch will be provided in both Houses as for sitting days.

5.  Parking in Peers' Car Park will be severely limited during the Lying in State.

Departure of the Cortège from Westminster Hall on Tuesday 9 April

6.  Arrangements for the departure of the Cortège will be similar to those outlined in Paragraph 1. above. The Cortège will leave at 11.00 am on 9 April. and Members of the House and their spouses are required to be in position by 10.30 am.

7.  Drivers of private cars are asked to note that parking will be severely limited on the day that the Cortège leaves Westminster Hall. Peers and Officers are requested to use Public Transport on 9 April if at all possible. Parking in Peers' Car Park will be suspended.
