Baroness Blatch: Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Lady Blatch has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking what was the average number of (a) male and (b) female prisoners in England and Wales in 1994, broken down into unconvicted, unsentenced, sentenced and other prisoners.
The information requested is published in a Home Office Statistical Bulletin The Prison Population in 1994 (Table 1, Issue 8/95) issued on 27 April 1995, an extract from which is provided.
