Organophosphate Sheep Dips: Working Party Report

The Countess of Mar asked Her Majesty's Government:

The Minister of State, Department of Health (Baroness Jay of Paddington): The Working Party on Management of Patients Chronically Exposed to Organophosphate Sheep Dips was set up by the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is independent of government. The question of publication of the Working Party's report is therefore a matter for the Royal Colleges. However, the Government understand that the report is likely to be put before the June Council of the Royal College of Physicians, and, if accepted, it will be published soon thereafter.

number of schools and the number of 14-year old pupils; and [HL902]

Whether they will publish data for Northern Ireland showing for secondary schools, grammar schools, all state schools, independent schools and all schools taken together, the percentage of all 14 year-old pupils in each of the years 1994 to 1997 passing National Curriculum tests at level 6 or better together with the average level attained per pupil and the corresponding average subject age of pupils, calculated using the relationship between expected National Curriculum level and actual pupil age published by the Department for Education and Employment, in the following subjects: mathematics, English and science, showing data separately for each type of state school the percentages and averages for local education authority schools, girls and all pupils and including, for each category of school, the number of schools and the number of 14 year-old pupils.[HL903]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Northern Ireland Office (Lord Dubs): The information is not available in the form requested. There are no assessment tests in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 in Northern Ireland. Assessment in Key Stages 1 and 2 is based on teacher assessment supported by assessment units, assessment in Key Stage 1 is at the end of year 4 (pupils aged 8), science is not assessed at Key Stage 1 or 2, and there are no direct equivalent categories of the schools requested.

The information shown is the percentage of pupils achieving each level in statutory assessment in 1997, the percentage achieving level 2 or above in Key Stage 1 and the percentage achieving Level 4 or above in Key Stage 2 and the percentage achieving level 6 or above in Key Stage 3 in all schools in each education and library board area in Northern Ireland. As a result of a boycott of assessment by some teachers the results for some 22 per cent. of pupils are not available in Key Stages 1 and 2 and the results of some 6 per cent. are not available in Key Stage 3.

16 Mar 1998 : Column WA120

1996-97 was the first year of statutory assessment in Northern Ireland: information is not available for earlier years.
