2.Lord Baker of Dorking—The Right Honourable Kenneth Wilfred Baker CH, having been created Baron Baker of Dorking, of Iford in the County of East Sussex, for life by Letters Patent dated 16th June 1997 (see appendix 2), was introduced between the Lord Hanson and the Baroness Thatcher, the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod and Garter King of Arms preceding; and took and subscribed the oath pursuant to statute.

Public Business

10.Business of the House—It was moved by the Lord Carter, on behalf of the Lord Privy Seal, that the debate on the motion in the name of the Lord Borrie set down for today shall be limited to 3½ hours; the motion was agreed to.
11.Industry: Competitiveness (3½-hour debate)—It was moved by the Lord Borrie that there be laid before the House papers relating to the case for improving the competitiveness of British industry; after debate, the motion was (by leave of the House) withdrawn.
12.Tourism—The Earl of Bradford asked Her Majesty’s Government what measures they propose to take to ensure the continued growth of tourism to Britain; after debate, the question was answered by the Lord McIntosh of Haringey.

The House was adjourned at twenty-two minutes before ten o’clock
