PRAYERS were read by the Lord Bishop of Exeter.

1.Nykredit Mortgage Bank plc (Respondents) v. Edward Erdman Group Limited (formerly Edward Erdman an unlimited company) (Appellants)—The cause was further considered; it was ordered and adjudged that the Appellants do pay to the Respondents simple interest on £1.4 million from 12th December 1990 at the agreed rate of 0.4% over LIBOR, that the remaining questions be answered in the terms of the speech by Lord Nicholls of Birkenhead; and that the appellants do pay to the respondents one half of their costs in this House, the amount thereof to be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties.
2.Longden (Respondent) v. British Coal Corporation (Appellants)—The cause was considered; it was ordered and adjudged that the appeal be allowed to the extent only that the Order of the Court of Appeal of 9th March 1995 be varied so that, for the sum of £427,753 substituted by the Court of Appeal, there be substituted the sum of £426,124; and that the appellants do pay to the respondent his costs in this House, the amount thereof to be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties.
3.Chief Adjudication Officer (Respondent) v. Wolke (A.P.) (Appellant)—
4.Remilien (A.P.) (Appellant) v. Secretary of State for Social Security and another (Respondent)—

The Report from the Appellate Committee was agreed to; it was ordered and adjudged that the Orders of the Court of Appeal of 18th June 1996 be set aside save for legal aid taxation; that the Order of Mr Commissioner Mesher of 4th May 1995 and the order of Mr Justice Popplewell of 30th April 1996 be restored; and that in each case the respondents do pay to the appellants their costs in the Court of Appeal and in this House; the amount of such last-mentioned costs to be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties and that the costs of the appellants be taxed in accordance with the Legal Aid Act 1988.

Zafar (Appellant) (Scotland)—The Report from the Appellate Committee was agreed to; it was ordered and adjudged that the Interlocutors of the Second Division of the Inner House of the Court of Session be affirmed and the appeal dismissed with costs, the amount thereof to be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties.
