Judicial Business

1.Regina v. Secretary of State for the Home Department and another (Respondents) ex parte Franc”ois (A.P.) (Appellant) (On Appeal from a Divisional Court of the Queen’s Bench Division)—The appeal of France Lois Franc”ois was presented and ordered to be prosecuted subject to the procedures applicable thereto.
2.Kuwait Airways Corporation and another (Appellants) v. Kuwait Insurance Company S A K and others (Respondents)—The petition of the appellants praying that the time for lodging the statement and appendix and setting down the cause for hearing might be extended to 9th February next (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto) was presented; and it was ordered as prayed.
3.Total Gas Marketing Limited (Respondents) v. Arco British Limited and others (Appellants)—It was ordered that the appellants be allowed to prosecute the appeal without giving the usual security for costs as required by Standing Order.
4.Regina v. Secretary of State for the Home Department (Appellant) ex parte Fayed and another (Respondents)—The petition of the appellant praying that the appeal be withdrawn on the terms agreed between the parties and on condition that the appellant do pay to the respondents any costs incurred in respect of the petition of appeal to this House, such costs to be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto) was presented; and it was ordered as prayed.
5.Appeal Committee—The following Orders were made pursuant to the 35th Report—

Svenska International Plc (Petitioners) v. Commissioners of Customs and Excise (Respondents)—That leave to appeal be given, and that the petition of appeal be lodged by 9th February next.

6.Appeal Committee—The following Order was made pursuant to the 42nd Report—

Credit Lyonnais Nederland NV (now known as Generale Bank Nederland NV) (Petitioners) v. Export Credits Guarantee Department (Respondents)—That leave to appeal be given, and that the petition of appeal be lodged by 9th February next.

7.Appeal Committee—The following Orders were made pursuant to the 46th Report—

8.Appeal Committee—The 47th Report from the Appeal Committee was agreed to and the following Order was made—

Reeman (A.P.) and another (A.P.) (Petitioners) v. Department of Transport and others (Respondents)—That leave to appeal be refused; that the costs of the petitioners be taxed in accordance with the Legal Aid Act 1988; and that the respondents be at liberty to apply for their costs in accordance with direction 5.1(c) and, if the application is granted, that the amount thereof be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties.

17.Bank of England Bill—A bill to make provision about the constitution, regulation, financial arrangements and functions of the Bank of England, including provision for the transfer of supervisory functions; to amend the Banking Act 1987 in relation to the provision and disclosure of information; to make provision relating to appointments to the governing body of a designated agency under the Financial Services Act 1986; to amend Schedule 5 to that Act; to make provision relating to the registration of Government stocks and bonds; to make provision about the application of section 207 of the Companies Act 1989 to bearer securities; and for connected purposes was brought from the Commons, read a first time and ordered to be printed. 18.Welfare of Pigs (No. 2) Bill [HL]—It was moved by the Lord Beaumont of Whitley that the bill be now read a second time; then it was moved as an amendment thereto to leave out (“now”) and at the end insert (“this day six months”); after debate, the amendment was agreed to (see division list).
