Source: Derived from the International Energy Agency Publication, Energy Prices and Taxes, Q 4, 1996.

NOTES:

(i)  The prices quoted in the table relate to average prices paid by industrial and domestic users.

(ii)  As prices are converted from a national currency basis to pounds sterling using annual average exchange rates, the relative position of countries can change solely due to exchange rate movements.

(iii)  The table has been prepared for the annual Digest of UK Energy Statistics (a publication of the Government Statistical Service), drawing on the work of the International Energy Agency.

(iv)  Alternative comparative analyses are also available. Taking other sources into account, it is possible that the table provided may underestimate the relative cheapness of UK domestic gas prices compared with Finland and Luxembourg. (For example, Eurostat data for July 1996 showed UK domestic gas prices as the lowest in the EU.)
