Select Committee on Science and Technology First Report

FIRST REPORT

29 July 1997

By the Select Committee appointed to consider Science and Technology.

ORDERED TO REPORT

REPORT OF THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY
INTO HIGHER EDUCATION
"THE DEARING REPORT"

The National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education, chaired by Sir Ron Dearing, published its report, "Higher Education in the Learning Society", on 23 July 1997. On 29 July we took evidence from Sir Ron, and also from Sir Ron Oxburgh KBE FRS, a member of the National Committee's Research Working Group. The hearing was focused on the parts of the Dearing Report-mainly Chapter 11-which deal with the role of universities as a location for research and research training.

We present the transcript of the hearing, without comment, as a contribution to the wider debate which must now take place. For our part, we will continue the discussion in meetings with the President of the Board of Trade in October, and with the Secretary of State for Education and Employment in the New Year.
