The Countess of MarTo ask Her Majestys Government upon what basis the opinion was formed that the single case of E coli 0157 infection which occurred on 19th April, traced to a batch of cheese made on the 4th, 5th or 6th April, constituted an emergency, involving a serious risk to public health, under the Food Safety Act 1990, by 19th May, when no other cases had been reported as a result of consumption of cheese from the same batches and no evidence of contamination by E coli 0157 was found in any other samples of cheese made by Mr Duckett. The Countess of MarTo ask Her Majestys Government what powers the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has to investigate animals potentially infected with E coli; and, if there are none, whether they intend to amend the Zoonoses Order to include E coli 0157. (HL2656)
