J Sainsbury plc and DTI Inquiry

Lord Brougham and Vaux asked Her Majesty's Government:

Lord McIntosh of Haringey: After an initial investigation by the Office of Fair Trading, the Director General of Fair Trading referred the supply of groceries by supermarkets to the Competition Commission on 8 April.

The Office of Fair Trading and the Competition Commission are independent bodies.

Representations about these inquiries received by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry have been addressed by J Sainsbury plc to the Director General of Fair Trading or the Competition Commission as appropriate.

Afghanistan: Arms Embargo

Lord Milner of Leeds asked Her Majesty's Government:

Baroness Scotland of Asthal: We remain committed to the EU arms embargo against Afghanistan, which the UK interprets as covering all goods and technology entered on Part III of Schedule 1 to the Export of Goods (Control) Order 1994, as amended.

Following consultations with this department and the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Trade and Industry has issued three licences for the export of mine clearance equipment for use by the United Nations and the Halo Trust to aid their demining activities in Afghanistan. The grant of these licences is for humanitarian purposes.
