Letter from Lord Tordoff, Chairman of
the Select Committee on the European Communities to Joyce Quin
MP, Minister of State at the Home Office
Thank you for your letter of 13 May. Copies
of your letter and of letters from Justice and the Immigration
Law Practitioners Association (ILPA) were before Sub-Committee
E (Law and Institutions) when it reconsidered the draft Convention
at its meeting yesterday.
The Committee decided to clear the Convention
from scrutiny but has asked to be kept informed of developments.
In particular, the Committee would be grateful for your reactions
to the points made by Justice and ILPA concerning the proposed
extension of the Convention to illegal immigrants. The Committee
expects to have early sight of any draft text to that effect and
reserves its right to conduct a detailed enquiry into the matter.
In the meantime, I enclose a copy of the letters
from Justice and ILPA. I look forward to receiving your reply
in the near future.
I am copying this letter to the Chairman and
Clerk of the European Legislation Committee in the House of Commons.
