1.Earldom of Ormond and Earldom of Ossory in the Peerage of Ireland—Upon application by the petitioner, Richard Henry Piers 17th Viscount Mountgarret, it was ordered that the petition be withdrawn.

Judicial Business

2.Yukong Line Limited (S.K. Shipping Limited) (Respondents) v. Rendsburg Investments Corporation and another (Petitioner) and others—The petition of Dimitrios Nicholas Yamvrias praying for leave to appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee.
3.Regina v. Dimsey (Appellant) (On Appeal from the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division))—The appeal was set down for hearing and referred to an Appellate Committee.
4.In re Norris (Respondent)—The petition of the appellant praying that the time for lodging the statement and appendix and setting down the cause for hearing might be extended to 7th March next (the agents for the respondent consenting thereto) was presented; and it was ordered as prayed.
5.Lawrence (Respondent) v. Lesser (Appellant)—It was ordered that the appeal be dismissed in accordance with Standing Order VI (1), the appellants having failed to lodge the Statement and the Appendix by 17th January.
6.Regina v. Sheffield City Council (Respondents) ex parte Low (AP) (Petitioner)—Upon application by the petitioner (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto), it was ordered that the petition be withdrawn and that there be no order as to costs save that the costs of the petitioner be taxed in accordance with the Legal Aid Act 1988.

10.Colchester Borough Council Bill [HL]—The bill was read a third time; amendments were agreed to and the bill was passed and sent to the Commons.

11.Business of the House—It was moved by the Baroness Jay of Paddington that the debates on the motions in the names of the Lord Simon of Glaisdale and the Lord Northbourne set down for today shall each be limited to 2½ hours; the motion was agreed to.
12.Parliament Acts and the Salisbury Convention (2½ hour debate)—It was moved by the Lord Simon of Glaisdale that there be laid before the House papers relating to the Parliament Acts and the Salisbury Convention in the light of recent constitutional developments; after debate, the motion was (by leave of the House) withdrawn.
13.Human Rights—A message was brought from the Commons that they have ordered the Committee appointed by them to meet with the Lords Committee on Wednesday 31st January at half-past five o’clock, as proposed by this House.

14.Boys and fatherhood (2½ hour debate)—It was moved by the Lord Northbourne that there be laid before the House papers relating to the problems experienced by boys growing up without the care of a father and to the case for more resources to be devoted to preparing boys to become responsible citizens and fathers; after debate, the motion was (by leave of the House) withdrawn.
15.Coroners—The Lord Ahmed asked Her Majesty’s Government whether they will modernise the working practices of H M Coroner Service to meet the needs of a multi-faith Britain; after debate, the question was answered by the Lord Bassam of Brighton.
