Judicial Business

1.Regina v. Spear (Petitioner)—The petition of John Spear praying for leave to appeal in accordance with the Courts Martial (Appeals) Act 1968 was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee (lodged 19th January).
2.Regina v. Hastie (Petitioner)—The petition of Philip David Hastie praying for leave to appeal in accordance with the Courts Martial (Appeals) Act 1968 was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee (lodged 19th January).
3.Regina v. A (Respondent) (On Appeal from the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division))—The petition of the Secretary of State for the Home Department praying for leave to intervene in the said appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee.
4.In re Lees (Petitioner) (application for a writ of Habeas Corpus)—Upon application by the petitioner (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto), it was ordered that the petition be withdrawn and that there be no order as to costs.
5.Appeal Committee—The 22nd Report from the Appeal Committee was agreed to and the following Order was made—

Director General of Fair Trading (Original Respondent and Cross-Petitioner) v. First National Bank plc (Original Appellants and Cross-Respondents)—That leave to cross-appeal be given, and that the petition of cross-appeal be lodged by 5th March next.

6.Appeal Committee—The 23rd Report from the Appeal Committee was agreed to and the following Order was made—

Regina v. Independent Television Commission (Appellants) ex parte TV Danmark 1 Limited (Respondents)—That the petition of the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport that he might be heard or otherwise intervene in the said appeal be allowed.

8.Regulatory Reform Bill [HL]—The bill was read a third time; an amendment was agreed to; amendments were disagreed to (see division lists 1 to 3); an amendment was moved and (by leave of the House) withdrawn; then the bill was passed and sent to the Commons.
9.Children’s Commissioner for Wales Bill—It was moved by the Lord Williams of Mostyn that the bill be now read a second time; after debate, the motion was agreed to and the bill was committed to a Committee of the Whole House.
10.Social Security (Contributions) (Re-rating and National Insurance Fund Payments) Order 2001—It was moved by the Lord McIntosh of Haringey that the draft Order laid before the House on 30th November 2000, be approved; after debate, the motion was agreed to.
11.Company and Business Names (Amendment) Regulations 2001—It was moved by the Lord McIntosh of Haringey that the draft Regulations laid before the House on 2nd February be approved; after debate, the motion was agreed to.

(“( ) A code of practice under this section shall incorporate the mandatory procedures set out in Schedule 1 to the 1994 Act, but that Schedule shall be interpreted as if in paragraph 3(a)(i) for the words “that he is considering taking the action and the reasons why he is considering it,” there is substituted “that he intends to take action and the reasons why;”.”);
