Select Committee on Religious Offences in England and Wales Written Evidence

Letter from the Oakington, Cambridgeshire, Strict Baptist Church

Religious Offences Bill (HL Bill 39 53/1)

I am writing as a Baptist Minister on behalf of my church and congregation to express our concern with regard to some Sections of the a/m Bill.

In particular, we strongly object to any change in the law regarding:

  Section 1(1)

    (a)  blasphemy and blasphemous libel

    (b)  any distinct offence of disturbing a religious service or religious devotions.

We have no objection to a proposed offence of racial or religious hatred.

I trust your Committee will take our view into account.
