Select Committee on Religious Offences in England and Wales Written Evidence

Submission from the Overseas Pakistanis Education Foundation

We are very concerned about the atmosphere of hatred against Muslims after the events of 11 September 2001. Muslims are feeling more vulnerable than ever before.

As equal citizens of this country we need laws to protect Muslims and all faith communities. Discrimination on the grounds of religion can only be prevented if Muslims are recognised as a distinct group like other faith groups, eg Jews. Similarly, the law of blasphemy should be applied to all religions and not only to Christianity.

We support efforts of your select committee to look into the problem of religious hatred and make recommendations to bring about suitable changes in the law.
