Select Committee on Religious Offences in England and Wales Written Evidence

Submission from West Worthing Evangelical Church

I write to ask you not to recommend the amending or abolishing of existing religious offences. I do not want to have the name of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ publicly blasphemed with impunity, and nor do my church members.

Nor would I want to make a new offence of incitement to religious hatred be created as this could be used to stifle the preaching of the Christian Gospel as being the only way of salvation. Any new law would be a denial of free speech and an infringement of public liberty.

This country has long had some Christian tradition and been affected for good by the teachings of the Bible and it would be both very sad and harmful to the Nation if this were to become even more eroded away.
