Bill

To

Make provision for the establishment of a Royal Commission on slavery.                                  

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and

consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present

Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Establishment of Royal Commission

(1)   

Within four months of the coming into force of this Act, the Secretary of State

shall cause to be established a Royal Commission on slavery.

(2)   

The Royal Commission shall enquire into the subject of slavery, including its

social, economic and political impact, and report on possible means for its

global abolition.

(3)   

For the purposes of this Act, “slavery” includes all existing forms of exercising

absolute control over another person’s life or liberty.

(4)   

The Royal Commission shall report within three years of the coming into force

of this Act.

2       

Short title and commencement

(1)   

This Act may be cited as the Royal Commission (Slavery) Act 2007.

(2)   

This Act shall come into force at the end of the period of two months beginning

on the day on which it is passed.
