Sub-Committee D (Environment and Agriculture)
has considered the proposals outlined in your Memorandum on the
above.
These proposals certainly represent a step in
the right direction, and we have noted that they seek to build
on proposals put forward at the end of last year by the UK Presidency.
We therefore support what is proposed, noting in doing so that
this is in line with earlier suggestions of ours.
We note also however that, while efforts will
be made to increase the number of fish stocks to which Spring
ICES advice can be applied, the timing of TAC proposals in respect
of stocks which will remain subject to Autumn advice will remain
unchanged. It is not clear to us to what extent this will alleviate
the position for agreeing TACs in respect of those stocks which
are most interest to UK fisherman. We therefore wish to keep the
position under review and would be grateful if you would keep
us in touch with developments on this issue.
