11760. CHAIRMAN: Well, it may or may
not have been but we have already ruled on this.
11761. MR ELVIN: My Lords, can I remind
the Committee at paragraph 5562 on Day 14 you actually ruled that
Option B was not a main alternative as well as the general point.
11762. CHAIRMAN: I had forgotten that,
but I am glad to be reminded. Well, there you are, Ms Khela. What
do you want us to do?
11763. MS KHELA: Well, I want this Committee
to protect the environs of the Spitalfields community with a change
to the alignment on the basis that we believe that it would be
the right and proper thing to do, and there must be a mechanism
by which your Lordship, who has a legal background, will be able
to do that.
11764. CHAIRMAN: There is no mechanism
whereby this Committee can do any such thing.
11765. MS KHELA: Well, then I believe
that it should go back to Government who then should respond to
this matter because they have encouraged us to wait until these
proceedings.
11766. CHAIRMAN: That is another matter.
It is not for us to send things back to Government. It is for
us to report to the whole House on what we think about the petitions
that have been placed before us. Anybody can take things to Government:
this, happily, is a country where you can do that, but it is not
for us to take things to Government, it is for us to report back
to the House on the hearings before the Select Committee.
