Examination of Witnesses (Questions 318-319)

Ms Magda Stoczkiewicz, Ms Esther Bollendorff and Ms Frauke Thies

5 JUNE 2008

Chairman: Good morning. Before you introduce yourselves, as a matter of courtesy I will ask my colleagues to introduce themselves and explain whether they are independent peers or belong to a political party and what their particular responsibilities are.

Lord Powell of Bayswater: Charles Powell. I am an Independent member of the House of Lords. I come from a combined diplomatic and business background.

Lord Paul: Swaraj Paul, I am a Labour member of the House of Lords and I come from an industrial background.

Lord James of Blackheath: David James with the Conservatives. Once upon a time I used to be in oil exploration at sea.

Lord Mitchell: Parry Mitchell, a Labour peer. I have an IT business background.

Lord Walpole: Robin Walpole, Independent. I am basically agricultural and that side of things. You may well ask what I am doing here, but I am more interested in ecological problems and that sort of thing.

Lord Bradshaw: Bill Bradshaw, transport background. Liberal Democrat.

Q318  Chairman: I am Roger Freeman, a Conservative peer, former minister and Chairman of EU Sub-Committee B which deals with the internal market. Our report is focused on renewable energy. Perhaps you would be kind enough to introduce yourselves.

Ms Stoczkiewicz: Thank you very much for inviting us . My name is Magda Stoczkiewicz. I have just started as Director in Friends of the Earth Europe, which is the European office of the Friends of the Earth Federation. You may know the UK group is a member group.

Ms Bollendorff: My name is Esther Bollendorff. I work on the climate and energy campaign in Friends of the Earth Europe.

Ms Thies: My name is Frauke Thies. I work for the European office of Greenpeace in Brussels and specialise in energy.

Q319  Chairman: Would you like to say something to begin or for us to go straight into questions, it is entirely up to you?

Ms Stoczkiewicz: Maybe just a couple of words. Both organisations work on issues related to climate and energy. For both organisations these are very important aspects. We see renewables as a big part of the solution to climate change and responding to the energy sector in Europe. I come from a new Member State, Poland. I also look at the issues related to the new Member States' energy potentials, so if we get to that area I can step in.
