Are the Lords listening? Creating connections between people and Parliament - Information Committee Contents

Letter from Lord Hunt of Chesterton

I HAVE FOUR POINTS

  1.  The press does not report speeches/statements even when they contain important new info. Perhaps peers could inform the press office about their intention to give such info. Some peers do that independently (as I have)-but the press office could help.

2.  Gov continues to be less than candid (verging on the polyannaish) in many of its statements to the house, which brings the whole house into disrepute.

3.  The press office could usefully follow that of the Scottish parliament which provides a running commentary for MSPs and public about progress of a bill. Nothing like that happens at Westminster, and we and the public are mostly in the dark.

  4.  The French senate has an annual reception for mayors across France, with regional food/wine etc. I have proposed this before. It would be fun and improve our relations.
