THE MARINE BILL: PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE COASTAL
STRIP
LARA is an umbrella organisation looking after
issues concerning access to land for motor sport and recreation.
Most of the national motor sport organisations of any size are
our members.
Our member organisations have concerns about
the proposals to widen public access on foot to the coastal areas.
We have nothing against the public gaining additional rights,
but would not wish these to be gained at our own cost.
Organised motor sport events have taken place
on the beach (foreshore) and dune areas for many decades. "Sand
racing" and "beach racing" are long-established
disciplines, obviously with the permission of the landowners and
the necessary authorisations.
There are also a relatively small number of
minor public roads in coastal areas and we should not wish to
see erosion of our interests in using and enjoying these.
The "right to roam" provisions have
generally had little noticeable impact on motor sport through
their careful drafting and other land use provisions. We should
respectfully ask the Committee to ensure that similar "fair
balance" provisions go into the new legislation and regulations.

matter than we would appreciate an invitation to participate.
