Judicial Business

1    R (on the application of Edwards and another (Appellant)) v Environment Agency and others (Respondents) It was moved by Lord Hoffmann that the 32nd Report from the Appellate Committee be agreed to; the motion was agreed to. It was ordered and adjudged that the Orders of the Court of Appeal of 27 June 2006 and 19 July 2006 be affirmed and the appeal dismissed; and

that the question of costs be adjourned in order that the parties may make written submissions within 14 days. [2008] UKHL 22

2    Principal and Fellows of Newnham College in the University of Cambridge (Respondents) v Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (Appellants) It was moved by Lord Hoffmann that the 33rd Report from the Appellate Committee be agreed to; the motion was agreed to. It was ordered and adjudged that the Order of the Court of Appeal of 24 March 2006 be affirmed and the appeal dismissed; and that the question of costs be adjourned in order that the parties may make written submissions within 14 days. 3    Simmers (Respondent) v Innes (Appellant) (Scotland) It was moved by Lord Hope of Craighead that the 34th Report from the Appellate Committee be agreed to; the motion was agreed to. It was ordered and adjudged that the Interlocutors of an Extra Division of the Inner House of the Court of Session in Scotland of 26 September 2006 and 23 February 2007 be affirmed and the appeal dismissed; and that the question of costs be adjourned in order that the parties may make written submissions within 14 days. 4    Smith (Respondent) v Chief Constable of Sussex Police (Appellant) (England) The appeal of the Chief Constable of Sussex Police was presented and it was ordered that in accordance with Standing Order VI the statement and appendix thereto be lodged on or before 28 May (lodged 11 April).

5    AK (Sri Lanka) (FC) (Petitioner) v Secretary of State for the Home Department (Respondent) The petition of AK praying for leave to appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee. The petitioner’s certificate of public funding was lodged (lodged 9 April).

6    R (on the application of Catt) (FC) (Petitioner) v Brighton and Hove City Council (Respondents) The petition of John Catt praying for leave to appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee. The petitioner’s certificate of public funding was lodged.

7    In re Okaro (FC) (Petitioner) (Northern Ireland) The petition of Chukwuma Charles Okaro praying for leave to appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee. The petitioner’s legal aid certificate was lodged (lodged 14 April).

8    R v Nguyen (Petitioner) The petition of Thu Van Nguyen praying for leave to appeal in accordance with the Criminal Appeal Act 1968 was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee (lodged 14 April).

9    R (on the application of Wellington) (Appellant) v Secretary of State for the Home Department (Respondent) (On Appeal from the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division)) The appeal was set down for hearing and referred to an Appellate Committee (lodged 10 April).

10    Transfield Shipping Inc (Appellants) v Mercator Shipping Inc (Respondents) The appeal was set down for hearing and referred to an Appellate Committee (lodged 11 April).

11    R (on the application of JL) (Respondent) v Secretary of State for Justice (Appellant) The petition of the appellant praying that the time for lodging the statement and appendix and setting down the cause for hearing might be extended to 22 April (lodged 7 April).

12    Mayor and Burgesses of the London Borough of Lewisham (Appellants) v Malcolm (FC) (Respondent) The respondent’s certificate of public funding was lodged.

13    Appeal Committee The 54th Report from the Appeal Committee was agreed to and the following Orders were made:
